Typography
Three facts:
1. The first typeface was called "Blackletter." It was dense but good for scribing.
2. The second typeface was the "Roman Type" and was founded by Nicholas Jenson in the 15th century. He was inspired by the lettering on ancient roman buildings.
3. The development of typefaces remained stagnant until the Second Industrial Revolution. Caslon, Baskerville, Didot, Bodoni, Sans-Serif, Futura, and other more modern fonts became available during and after the revolution. Additionally, television and advertising became more flexible and allowed all sorts of typefaces.
The picture below shows the first italic typeface.
