"Great Designers Steal" Talk- Reflection
"Good artists copy. Great artists steal." -Picasso
This quote was very interesting to wrap my head around. I liked how Jeff Veen talked about the intention and outcome of copying/stealing ideas. I do think companies copy ideas, but I think companies should be stealing, not only copying.
Copying is one thing and means there is no intention of improvement, only personal benefit. For example, every now and then, a technology device like the iPhone or iPad comes out and becomes immediately popular. Another company will "copy" this idea with the Android or tablet. Both the iPhone and the Android are similar and have similar features. Soon, other companies start producing a similar product but are essentially "knock-offs." Good companies will steal ideas. Stealing is more innovative. Stealing means to copy an idea first, and then build on it. As Jeff Veen said towards the end of his talk, we should be stealing, and stand on the shoulders of those we took the original ideas from.
